The material has 5 different size bolts but similar size knobs.  These are beautifully designed to fit a toddlers hand comfortably in red. The use of tools is an important skill set to master from an early age, and this set of the Nuts and Bolts material helps develop the ability to recognize and manipulate threaded bolts of different sizes. Asking children to screw the nuts is also a classic Montessori Practical Life activity to refine fine motor skills.
